Smart Checkout

How to set up Smart Checkout in the Trust template for OpenCart 3: customer and address fields, shipping and payment methods with conditions, additional fields, recommended products, block order.

6 min read

Smart Checkout replaces the standard OpenCart checkout: everything on one page, only the fields you need, shipping and payment methods with display conditions. Open Octemplates → Modules → Smart Сheckout module.

Main settings

Smart Checkout main settings

Main options

  • Status — enables Smart Checkout instead of the standard checkout. When off, the standard OpenCart checkout works.
  • Enable Cart? — a block with products, quantities and prices right on the checkout page.

Checkout behaviour

SettingWhat it does
Do not call to confirm orderA “Do not call me, I am sure about the order” checkbox, so the manager knows no call is needed.
Contact via Telegram/ViberA checkbox to be contacted via messengers instead of a call.
Offer authorizationA login form for registered customers right on the page.
Offer registrationAn offer to create an account during checkout.
Display cost in delivery blockThe shipping price next to the method name, not only in the totals.
Show shipping in order totalsA shipping line in the order totals.
Autoselect first shipping methodThe first available method is selected automatically — one click less.
Country and region above shipping methodsCountry and region are chosen once above the methods list; methods unavailable for them are hidden.
Display weight?Cart weight, if weight is enabled in the store settings.
Allow coupons? / gift certificates?Fields for a coupon code and a gift certificate.
Autosubmit payment methodsThe payment method is confirmed right after it is chosen, without an extra click.

Customer group

Turn on “Show customer group choice” if you have different terms for retail and wholesale customers. Group radio buttons appear above the fields. Choose when to show the choice (to all guests or only when registering) and the groups to choose from — at least two. Form fields can depend on the selected group.

Other settings

  • Minimum order amount — orders below this amount can’t be placed. 0 — no limit.
  • Free shipping from — the customer sees how much is left until free shipping. 0 — off.
  • Shipping and payment method icon size — 20 px by default.
  • Mail value if Email field is disabled or empty — used in the order when you don’t ask for an email or the customer left it empty. OpenCart requires an email in every order.

Customer and address fields

The “User Block” and “Delivery Address Block” tabs control which fields the customer sees:

  • User block: first name, last name, telephone, email, fax;
  • Address block: country, region, city, address (two lines), postcode, company.

User block fields

For each field you can:

  • turn it on or off and make it required;
  • change the order — drag it by the icon;
  • choose who sees it: everyone, only guests or only registered customers;
  • set display conditions (globe icon) — for which delivery countries and customer groups the field is needed;
  • edit localization (pencil icon) — your own field name and hint for each language.

A separate field set for a shipping method

On the left is the list of field sets. “Default” applies to all shipping methods. To have different fields for a specific method — for example, a courier needs an address and in-store pickup doesn’t — pick the method in the “Choose and configure the delivery method” list and click “Add delivery method”.

The “Preview” bar at the top shows which fields a customer from the selected country or group will see: extra fields are dimmed. This is only a preview in the admin.

At the bottom of the block you can add an additional field — see “Additional fields”.

Tip. The fewer fields, the more orders get completed. For carriers with pickup points, a name, surname and phone are often enough — the customer picks the address in the shipping method form.

Shipping and payment methods

The “Delivery Methods” and “Payment Methods” tabs list all methods installed in OpenCart. Pick a method in the list on the left and set its status, image, who sees it (everyone, guests or registered customers) and when it is available. The “Edit Localization” switch lets you change the method name and description for each language.

Shipping method settings

ConditionWhat it does
CountriesThe method is shown only for the selected delivery countries. Empty — for all.
Filter manufacturers / categoriesThe method is available only if the cart has products of these manufacturers or categories. With “Exclude” — the opposite: it becomes unavailable for them.
Available only with currenciesThe method is shown only for the selected currencies. None selected — for all.
Minimum order amountThe method is available from this amount. 0 — no limit.
Free shipping fromFor a shipping method: its own free shipping threshold.
In which delivery methods is it not available?For a payment method: for example, cash on delivery only with a specific carrier.

Additional fields

Your own form fields: “Company tax ID”, “Payer name”, “Preferred delivery time” and so on. These are standard OpenCart custom fields (Customers → Custom Fields) — on this tab you can create, edit and delete them without leaving the module.

Additional fields

For a field set: name, where to display (account details or address), field type (text, select, radio and so on), value, validation (a regular expression, for example /^[0-9]{8}$/ for an 8-digit code), customer group, status and sort order. A minus in the sort order hides the field without deleting it.

Then add the field to the form: on the “User Block” or “Delivery Address Block” tab pick it in “Choose custom field” and click “Add custom field”.

  • Recommended products — an “Add to your order” block on the checkout page. The sources are the same as in the popup cart: related products from the product page, items sold together (requires the “Bought together” CRON) and your own list. Set the title, block description and image size.
  • Order comment — the title and hint of the comment field for each language.

Block order

On the “Block order on the checkout page” tab drag the blocks into the order you need: recommended products, cart, customer details, shipping, comment.

Customer phones

The “Customer Phones” tab finds numbers stored in different formats and converts them to +380XXXXXXXXX — handy before SMS campaigns or exporting to a CRM. Before fixing you see the current and new version of each number. Works only for Ukrainian numbers.
