Abandoned carts

How to win back customers who didn’t finish their order: automatic reminder emails with a cart link, a discount coupon, CRON and manual cart management in the Trust template for OpenCart 3.

3 min read

The module remembers the carts of customers who left an email or phone number on the checkout page but didn’t complete the order, and sends them reminders with a link that restores the cart. Works together with Smart Checkout.

Open Octemplates → Modules → Smart Checkout - abandoned carts.

How it works

  1. The cart is saved

    A customer entered an email or phone and left without ordering. The cart appears on the “Carts” tab with the “not ordered” status.

  2. Reminders are sent

    After the set number of hours the customer gets the first, then the second email with a link that restores their cart. If the customer left a phone number and the abandoned cart template is enabled in the SMS Notify module, they also get an SMS.

  3. The customer comes back

    The link opens the cart with the same products. If the coupon is enabled, the email contains a personal discount code.

  4. The cart is cleaned up

    After checkout the cart becomes “converted” and is deleted automatically after a while.

Settings

Abandoned carts settings

General

  • Status — enables the module.
  • Allow login by token — if the cart was created by a registered customer, the email link logs them into their account right away. Convenient, but it’s safer to keep the cart validity short — up to 10 days.

Reminders and retention

SettingWhat it doesExample
Hours to first reminderWhen to send the first email. 0 — don’t send.2
Hours to second reminderWhen to send the second email. 0 — don’t send.24
Cookie and cart validity periodHow many days the cart is kept and the email link works.7
Days to delete converted cartsCleanup of completed carts.30

Scheduled run (CRON)

Reminders are sent only when the CRON job runs.

  1. Set a password

    Enter a password in “Cron call password” and save the settings.

  2. Add the job on your hosting

    After saving, a ready-made command appears — add it to the hosting scheduler to run every hour:

    /usr/bin/wget -O - -q -t 1 'https://your-site/index.php?route=octemplates/module/oct_abandoned_cart/cron&cron_pass=PASSWORD'

The module creates the API key itself during installation — it protects the links in emails. Don’t change or clear this field: without the key carts aren’t saved.

Discount coupon

Turn on “Generate discount coupon” to include a personal coupon in the reminder — a separate one is created for each cart. Set the discount amount, the type (percent or fixed amount) and the coupon validity period in days.

Tip. A good scheme: the first reminder after 1–2 hours without a coupon, the second after a day — with a 5–10% coupon.

Carts

The “Carts” tab shows all abandoned carts and stats: total, not ordered, converted, reminders sent. Carts can be filtered by name, email, phone, status and dates.

Abandoned carts list

Actions for each cart:

  • Copy cart link — for example, to send it in a messenger;
  • Send notification — a manual reminder without waiting for CRON;
  • Mark as converted — if the customer ordered another way, for example by phone;
  • Delete the cart.

Email templates

Turn on “Custom email templates” to set your own subject and email body for each language. If off, or the template for a language is empty, the default text is sent.

Email templates

Use shortcodes in the text — the buttons above the editor insert them:

ShortcodeReplaced with
[customer_name]Customer name
[restore_link]Cart recovery link
[products]Products in the cart
[promo_code]Coupon code (if enabled)
[store_name]Store name

Email example:

<p>[customer_name], you left items in your cart at [store_name]:</p>
[products]
<p>Here’s a discount to complete your order: <b>[promo_code]</b></p>
<p><a href="[restore_link]">Back to your cart</a></p>
